GUN DOG TRAINING

Our Gun Dog training courses are configured into different programs to cater to your individual needs. These programs include a puppy program (all breed), intermediate and advanced Retriever Training, and intermediate and advanced Pointing Dog training.

All Breed Puppy Intro
Duration – 3 Weeks

Ages – At Least 5 Months

Quite possibly the most crucial program to the success of your dog, our Puppy program is where we set the stage for your dog's future. Your pup was born with a variety of different talents that are bred into his/her genes — this program is designed to wake those genes up!

Throughout the duration of the program, we want to bring out as much bird desire in your pup as possible. We want to wake up that prey drive and turn them onto birds. Along with getting that bird desire, your pup will begin learning how to use his nose to find and flush game. Your pup will start on dead birds, then move on to clipped wing birds and finally onto flushing live game. We will also take the common thing that we see dogs develop, a fear due to improper introduction of gunfire, and introduce it the proper way. We will work at your dog's pace as to not promote the fear of any of these obstacles.

RETRIEVERS

Intermediate Program
Duration – 12 weeks
Ages – At Least 9 Months

During the Intermediate program, your dog will go through both on- and off-leash control. We'll introduce whistle commands with whistle sit and recall. Having this level of control, both on and off the leash, is part of the foundation we lay for future training.

Along with both land and water retrieves, your dog will also go through the trained retrieve for that good, solid retrieve to hand. There will be plenty of exposure to both birds and gunfire in this program for your dog. Introduction to the e-collar is also covered in this course. Finally, we will also work on marking downed game and trailing birds as well as conditioning to make sure your pup is physically field ready.

Owner involvement is recommended for at least three sessions during the program.

Advanced Program
Duration – 12 weeks

In our Advanced program, we will finish the foundation that your dog has started on. We will go into advanced fieldwork such as honoring another dog's retrieve (both in waterfowl and upland situations), whistle sit, hand signals and taking direction, advanced marking and steadiness. The objective of this program is to have that finished retriever that you have always wanted.

There will also be conditioning, as in the Intermediate program, so that your dog is ready to hit the field in good shape.

Again, owner involvement is recommended for at least three sessions during the program.

POINTERS

Intermediate Program
Duration – 12 weeks
Ages – At least 9-12 Months

During the Intermediate program, your dog will go through both on- and off-leash control. We will establish fieldwork with quartering skills and making sure we get the teamwork mentality so your dog knows he is hunting with you and not for himself. This will give you control of your canine companion both at home and in the field.

Your dog will also go through the trained retrieve for that good, solid retrieve to hand. There will be plenty of exposure to both birds and gunfire in this program for your dog. Introduction to the e-collar is also covered in this course. We will work on a steady point, marking down birds and delivering to hand.

Owner involvement is recommended for at least three sessions during the program.

Advanced Program
Duration – 12 weeks

In our Advanced program, we will finish the foundation that your dog has started on. We will go into advanced fieldwork such as honoring another dog's point and retrieve, taking direction, advanced marking and steadiness to wing and shot. The objective of this program is to have that finished pointer that you have always wanted.

There will also be conditioning, as in the Intermediate program, so that your dog is ready to hit the field in good shape.

"I sent Kimber to River Stone Kennels in late spring of 2012 for some advanced training. I could not be happier with the results. Kimber went to Josh after her first full season of hunting because I wanted her to meet her potential. It turns out I had underestimated her potential, as the dog I got back completely exceeded my expectations."
