Our Gun Dog training courses are configured into different programs to cater to your individual needs. These programs include Bird and Gun Introduction, Intermediate and Advanced Retriever Training.
Bird and Gun Introduction
Ages – At Least 5 Months
Duration: 3 weeks
Quite possibly the most crucial program to the success of your dog, our Puppy program is where we set the stage for your dog's future. Your pup was born with a variety of different talents that are bred into his/her genes — this program is designed to wake those genes up!
Throughout the duration of the program, we want to bring out as much bird desire in your pup as possible. We want to wake up that prey drive and turn them onto birds. Along with getting that bird desire, your pup will begin learning how to use his nose to find and flush game. Your pup will start on dead birds, then move on to clipped wing birds and finally onto flushing live game. We will also take the common thing that we see dogs develop, a fear due to improper introduction of gunfire, and introduce it the proper way. We will work at your dog's pace as to not promote the fear of any of these obstacles.
Intermediate Program
Ages – At Least 7 Months
Duration: 12-14 weeks
Prerequisite: Bird and Gun Introduction
During the Intermediate program, your dog will go through both on- and off-leash control. Introduction to the e-collar is also covered in this course.
Your dog will also go through the trained retrieve for that good, solid retrieve to hand. There will be plenty of exposure to both birds and gunfire in this program for your dog. The Intermediate program focuses on working through decoys (both land and water), extending marks up to 100+ yards, and simulating ‘real life’ hunts to make sure your pup is physically ready for the field. This program can be tailored to upland hunting, waterfowl hunting, or a combination of both.
Owner involvement is recommended for at least two sessions during the program.
Advanced Program
Ages: At Least 1 year
Duration: 16 weeks
Prerequisite: Josh’s approval
In our Advanced program, we will finish the foundation that your dog has started on. We will go into advanced fieldwork such as honoring another dog's retrieve (both in waterfowl and upland situations), whistle sit, hand signals and taking direction, advanced marking and steadiness. The objective of this program is to have that finished retriever that you have always wanted.
Again, owner involvement is recommended for at least two sessions during the program.
